If you’re someone new to the area, or maybe you just haven’t made it out of your comfort zone quite yet, you’re probably looking for some fun things to do here in Lubbock.  It may seem like there isn’t a whole lot offered, but look no further as we came up with a list of some of our favorite things to do around town!

Let’s start with perhaps the most obvious:

Catch a Texas Tech Sporting Event

Even if sports aren’t your thing, this is a great way to spend one of your free afternoons or nights.  The collegiate atmosphere and camaraderie are just an added bonus of attending.  Texas Tech sporting events are a fun pass time for families, couples and friends.  Basketball, Softball, and Baseball seasons are already underway and Football starts up again August 31.  Find sport schedules and tickets through the Texas Tech University Athletics website

Visit the Texas Tech Museum

Texas Tech is an important part of the Lubbock Community, so if you are new to town we suggest you visit the Museum of Texas Tech.  They have a little something for everyone with exhibits featuring a mix of fine arts, cultural artifacts and natural science.  They also have a planetarium and a program called Museum by Night they offer at different times throughout the year.  You can find more information about the Museum of Texas Tech by clicking here

National Ranching Heritage Center

With agriculture being an important livelihood here in West Texas, the National Ranching Heritage Center is a place to visit if you’re looking to learn a little about the “good ‘ol days”.  With structures dating back to the 1700’s and a museum with seven galleries, you are guaranteed to learn a thing or two about western life.  The National Ranching Heritage Center hosts, “Candlelight at the Ranch”, a Christmas “living Christmas Card” event that replicates the Frontier holidays.  Also located on the Texas Tech Campus, you can find more about the NRHC through their website.

Buddy Holly Center

Named after the infamous, Lubbock native, the Buddy Holly Center is where “art and music collide”.  The center has many exhibits featuring both performing artists and musicians of West Texas, and visual arts.  The West Texas Walk of Fame can be found just west of the Buddy Holly Center and honors artists who have close ties to the Lubbock area.  Admission ranges from $5.00-$8.00 and is free with a Military ID.

First Friday Art Trail

The First Friday Art Trail is a truly unique Lubbock Experience.  This free, public art event takes place on the first Friday of every month in the Cultural District of Lubbock.  Enjoy art, music, food, and wine while visiting one of the numerous art galleries, museums, and local businesses that participate.  They even offer free trolley rides to and from the downtown galleries.  Find more information and participating venues at www.ffat.org.

American Wind Power Center

Enjoy, yet another, unique Lubbock experience at the American Windmill Museum.  The 28 acre museum features both operational and historic windmills along with incredible views of the Lubbock skyline.  A family of four can get in for $20 and Active Military and family can get in for free.  More about the American Wind Power Center can be found on their website.

Wineries

If you’re looking for some grown-up fun, or a great happy hour hang out Lubbock has quite a few local wineries that will fit the bill! McPherson Cellars, Caprock Winery, and Pheasant Ridge Winery are just some of the great wineries in the area for you to spend your evening at.

Stars and Stripes Drive In

This is one we often forget about but it is fun none-the-less.  Be taken back to a simpler time when you pull into the 50’s themed drive-in! With a full concession stand and playground, this is a great place for the whole family.  Admission is between $5-8 and they are open Friday-Sunday and EVERY night between May and August.  For movies listings, visit their website

This is just a short list of some of our favorite Lubbock activities.  If there is a local activity that is your favorite that we missed, comment and let us know!  We can add it to our next to-do post!
